Daft Punk — Tron: Legacy

Where a Custom Modcan Modular Met an 85-Piece Orchestra

When Disney hired Daft Punk to score Tron: Legacy in 2010, they got more than a soundtrack — they got a collision of worlds. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo built a custom Modcan modular synthesizer system for the project, then paired it with an 85-piece orchestra recorded at AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London. The result was a score that sounded like nothing else in cinema: pulsing electronic sequences bleeding into sweeping orchestral movements, neither side willing to yield.

The Modcan modular synthesizer is a Canadian-made Eurorack-format system known for its clean signal path and precise oscillators. Daft Punk assembled a custom configuration specifically for Tron: Legacy, later using the same system on their iconic Pyramid stage during live performances. The Modcan system handled the film's electronic textures — the pulsing Grid sequences, the digital atmospheres, the synthetic heartbeat of the Tron universe. On the other side of the studio, conductor Joseph Trapanese led an 85-piece orchestra at AIR Lyndhurst, one of the world's premier scoring stages.

Why It Matters

Tron: Legacy marked the moment Daft Punk proved they could compose for cinema, not just clubs. The Modcan system they built for the score is a collector's dream — individual Modcan modules sell for $300–$800 each on the secondary market, and a full system matching the Tron configuration would run well into five figures. The score itself has become the definitive example of electronic-orchestral fusion in film.
