April Base Studios is where Justin Vernon built Bon Iver from a cabin-recording project into a Grammy-winning phenomenon. The studio — named after Vernon's grandfather — was designed to be a creative retreat: isolated enough to demand focus, equipped enough to produce world-class recordings.

The Neve 8088 mixing console is the heart of April Base. A vintage broadcast/recording desk from Neve's golden era, the 8088 delivers the warm, harmonically rich sound that defines the 'Neve character' — a slight saturation and three-dimensionality that digital consoles still struggle to replicate.
The studio's outboard collection reads like a greatest-hits of recording history: Neve 1073 mic preamps ($3K–$4K each), Teletronix LA-2A optical compressors, an AMS RMX16 digital reverb, a Bricasti M7 reverb, and an Eventide H3000 harmonizer. The microphone locker includes a Neumann U47, Sony C-37, and Shure SM7B.
The tape machine — a Studer A827 24-track — represents April Base's commitment to analog recording. Vernon and his engineers frequently track to tape before transferring to digital for editing, capturing the subtle compression and harmonic content that tape imparts.

Bon Iver's self-titled second album, recorded at April Base, won the Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album in 2012.
