The Story
Frank Sinatra didn't just listen to music. He inhabited it. And the room where he did his most serious listening — the living room of his compound in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs — was designed with the same meticulous attention to detail he brought to every vocal performance.
The setup centered on a McIntosh C-22 preamplifier and matching power amplifier, feeding through speakers positioned in the mid-century modern living room that overlooked the desert and his private swimming pool. A Rek-O-Kut turntable handled vinyl playback, and a Fisher R-200 tuner pulled in radio. The room was all clean lines, desert light, and the warm amber glow of McIntosh tubes.
Sinatra was particular about everything — the ice in his Jack Daniel's, the thread count of his shirts, the exact placement of the microphone in Capitol Studio A. The Gear
The McIntosh C-22 is arguably the most beautiful preamplifier ever made. Its glass faceplate, illuminated green McIntosh logo, and warm tube circuitry have made it the centerpiece of countless audiophile collections. Introduced in 1963, the C-22 paired with the MC275 power amplifier to create what many consider the finest tube amplification system of the golden age.
The Rek-O-Kut turntable was a professional-grade deck favored by radio stations and discerning home listeners in the 1950s and '60s. These were broadcast-quality machines — heavy platters, precise motors, and the kind of build quality that made them last decades. For Sinatra, who had spent his career in radio and recording studios, the Rek-O-Kut was a familiar instrument.
The Fisher R-200 tuner, from Avery Fisher's legendary tube-era lineup, provided FM reception with a warmth and selectivity that modern digital tuners can approximate but never quite replicate. The Fisher name carried the same weight in 1960s hi-fi that McIntosh carries today.
