What this site collects, who else sees it, and the choices you have. Plain language, specific to how this site actually works.

The short version
- There are no accounts, newsletters or payments on this site.
- The contact form sends your message, with basic page and browser details, to a Google Sheet kept by the site operator.
- Product links to Amazon and eBay are affiliate links, and those sites set their own cookies when you arrive.
- Fonts load from Google Fonts, and some pages use Google Analytics.
Who we are
Stereos For Sale (stereosforsale.com) is an editorial and affiliate site about used and vintage stereo gear, and about the gear that shows up in film, TV and music. It is operated by Scout Theory LLC. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean the site and its operator.
The site has no user accounts, no checkout and no payments. We don't sell anything ourselves; we link to other retailers.
What we collect and why
When you use the contact form
The form on the contact page sends us your name, email address, the topic you chose, your answers to the optional questions (the part of the site, the gear, a link) and your message. We use these only to read and answer you, to check a correction, or to handle a privacy request.
Along with what you type, the form automatically sends the page it was sent from, the referring page if your browser provides one, your browser's user-agent string, your language setting and how long the page was open before you sent it. We use these to spot spam and to understand the context of a message. The form also contains a hidden field that real visitors leave empty, which helps filter out bots.
All of this goes into a Google Sheet operated by the site owner. Google acts as a processor for that storage. We don't use the sheet for marketing and we don't add you to a mailing list.
When you just browse
Like most web servers, the one that hosts this site records standard request logs, typically your IP address, the time, the page requested and your browser details. These are used for security and troubleshooting.
Your browser also contacts Google when a page loads fonts from Google Fonts (see below). Pages that carry the Google tag may collect usage data as described under analytics.
What we don't collect
- No payment details or order information: nothing is bought on this site.
- No account data: there are no accounts or logins.
- No sensitive information on purpose. Please leave passwords, card numbers and order numbers out of your message.
Cookies and affiliate tracking
Many product links on this site are affiliate links to Amazon and eBay. They carry our partner identifiers so the retailer can tell a visit came from us and credit us if you buy. When you click through, Amazon or eBay may set their own cookies or similar identifiers on their site and handle that data under their own privacy policies. We don't see your purchases or your account there; we only receive commission reporting from the program.
Affiliate links are marked as sponsored. Following one costs you nothing extra. We don't run advertising networks or retargeting on the site, and the site itself does not use cookies to log you in or to build a profile of you.
You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings, and you can still read the site and use affiliate links without accepting them, though a retailer may then be unable to credit us.
Analytics
Some pages on the site load the Google tag for Google Analytics. Where it is present, it may set cookies and can record things such as the page viewed, approximate location, device and browser details and which outbound links are clicked, so we can see which guides are read and which affiliate links get used. Many other pages load no analytics script at all.
Our article pages also note affiliate link clicks as an event in the page, so that an analytics tag can count them where one is present. That note isn't sent anywhere on pages without such a tag.
You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on, your browser's tracking protection or a content blocker.
Third parties
- Google. Google Fonts delivers the site's typefaces (Instrument Serif and Outfit), which means your browser requests them from Google's servers and Google receives your IP address and browser details. Google also hosts the sheet that stores contact-form messages and runs Google Analytics on pages that use it.
- Amazon. We take part in Amazon Associates. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
- eBay. We take part in the eBay Partner Network, and many of our links open eBay searches or listings.
- Other sites. Some pages link to sister sites and to other websites. They are separate, with their own policies.
- Our hosting. The site runs on servers the operator manages, where the request logs above are kept.
The Amazon and eBay programs are the affiliate relationships in use on the site's product links today. If we add another, its links will be marked the same way and this page will be updated.
We don't sell your personal information. We may disclose information if the law requires it or to protect the site and its users from abuse.
How long we keep it
We keep contact-form messages for as long as needed to answer you and to keep a record of corrections and requests. Server logs and analytics data are kept for the periods the underlying services use by default. If you ask us to delete your message, we will.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us what contact-form information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Use the contact form and choose “Privacy or data request”. Write from the email address you want us to look up so we can match it. We may need to confirm it's really you before we act.
You can also block cookies and scripts in your browser, use a content blocker, or decline to use the contact form. The site works for reading without any of them.
Children
The site is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has sent us a message, tell us through the contact form and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If the site's practices change, for example a new analytics tool or a new affiliate partner, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Please check back occasionally.
